"Writers aren't exactly people... they're a whole lot of people trying to be one person." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
When we engage in the creative process and conceive fully-dimensional characters, we not only gain access to hidden aspects of our Selves but to The Divine as well. The process of writing fiction has the power to evoke changes within us like no other form of writing.
To write fiction, we must simultaneously step out of and dive into our psyches. That is, we must step out to gain the objective consciousness required to impart imaginary stories that are not mere recountings of our own life experiences, and we must dive in to gain the emotional awareness required to understand characters' motivations and to make them credible. This synchronous process of stepping out and diving in creates an internal alchemical reaction within the writer--a shifting of energies that alters the writer internally.
This is not to say that the finished product (the short story, novel, play, screenplay) lies solely in this process, though. There is an aspect of fiction writing--of the creative process, in general--that is inherently magical and cannot be explained or taught. It is the moment when everything the writer knows and feels coalesces with the energies of the Universe, and The Divine steps in. It is the moment when the person holding the pen or moving her fingers across the keyboard surrenders to something greater than herself, steps off the ledge, and trusts that she will fly. It is the moment when the collective unconscious offers itself to a mortal and allows her, through her characters, to speak the truth.
When we allow our characters to speak this truth, we form nurturing partnerships and alliances with them and gain the opportunity to reach a higher, deeper, and more expansive understanding of our varied Selves, and in the process, we heal not only our individual minds, hearts, and souls, but we also heal the Universe.
I currently offer six-week and full-day weekend workshops.
