Found Objects the feature
2011
Screenplay

Found Objects, the feature length, is a follow-up to a 45-minute narrative film of the same name, which I produced in 2008.

The first version addressed Claire Randall’s attempts to alleviate her angst from feeling trapped in the domestic sphere. To cope, Claire honors her compulsion to create shadowboxes made from the found objects she collects during her walks in the country near her home and from antique and junk shops. In this first version, Claire also creates an imaginary mystery man who fills in where her husband leaves off. While he serves his purpose for a time, Claire ultimately finds the love and satisfaction she seeks in a most unexpected place.

The feature length version stays true to the original’s theme and speaks to women’s creative impulses and the challenge of honoring them when operating within the domestic sphere. In the feature length, the story begins the morning after Claire’s family’s house has burned down. To add more fuel to the flames, so to speak, just before the fire, Claire has told her husband, Jack, that she is planning to leave him. Following the fire, Claire struggles with whether or not to follow through with her plan to leave in light of their shared tragedy or create a life that will allow for her creativity.

Found Objects is not only about creative women’s compulsion to make art and their struggle to do so in the domestic sphere, while honoring their feminine impulses, it’s about gender, gender roles, the institutions of marriage and motherhood, and the necessity to create for the sake of personal authenticity, spiritual serenity, and sanity.

THIS FILM IS CURRENTLY IN POST-PRODUCTION.

Semi-finalist at the 2011 Moondance International Film Festival.
